“The Ability To See Beyond The Disability”
As part of our education project we are proud to work with St Helens College to offer their students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities a range of ‘hands on’ vocational courses.
We offer fully accredited courses which have been developed in partnership with St Helens College. The courses are very practical-based and help participants build confidence, boost self esteem and contribute meaningfully to the development of the farm.
Course participants improve their social interaction with others and gain experience of being part of a team. Areas covered include safe working practices, using and caring for tools, planting, weeding, harvesting and caring for animals and wildlife.
Vocational courses with St Helens College
Skills for Working life is a custom designed qualification that allows people to study horticulture, conservation or floristry at a level and pace that suits them.
Candidates attend Bridge Inn Community Farm and carry out a range of practical tasks that lead them towards this nationally recognised qualification. As part of the course people may help with planting new crops, building a new chicken coup, caring for the animals or digging out a plot for the next seasonal veg. All participants are supported by staff who have worked with people with learning disabilities for many years and can take home what they produce, such as tomatoes or cucumbers. If the weather’s bad there is also the opportunity to make mosaics or bird boxes indoors.
The courses provide people with something to show for their work, a sense of accomplishment and the opportunity to take ownership of what they do. Many participants bring friends and relatives to the farm to show them the work they have done.
The courses are £8 per hour or £5 if you bring your own support worker. You can go for an hour or for the whole week – it is up to you. Course length and time on site will vary according to the qualification you follow.
